NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, a state-of the-art multicultural community-based medical and dental clinic located at 1313 Penn Avenue North, has a current full-time opening for a Senior Coding, Auditing & Billing Specialist. The Senior Coding, Auditing & Billing Specialist will apply appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to patient/client health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing; and ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:
  • Assign appropriate ICD-9-CM and CPT codes to diagnoses and procedures generated in an outpatient encounter.
  • Consult reference materials to facilitate accurate code assignment and abstract demographic and clinical data.
  • Verify the National and Local Coverage Determinations (NCD/LCD) for medical necessity.
  • Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health and data collected for appropriate reimbursement.
  • Develop and coordinate educational programs for the HIM compliance program (e.g., appropriate documentation and accurate coding) for personnel, HIM coding staff, physicians, billing personnel and ancillary departments.
  • Monitor changes to laws and regulations to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations and mandates.
  • Conduct regular audits and coordinate ongoing monitoring of coding accuracy and documentation adequacy; provide feedback and focused educational programs on the results of auditing and monitoring activities to affected staff and physicians.
  • Review claim denials and rejections pertaining to coding and medical necessity issues; implement corrective action plans.
  • Serve as liaison for department managers, staff physicians and administrators.
  • The Ideal Candidate must have:
  • Associate's degree or higher from an American Health Information Management Association approved program and two or more years of post accreditation medical records coding experience.
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or higher by the American Health Information Management Association.
  • Experience working with ICD-9-CM and CPT coding principles and conventions.
  • Experience employing problem solving skills.
  • Experience ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures for access and disclosure of personal health information and ethical standards of practice.
  • Skill in working with computers and knowledge of Microsoft Office software (e.g., MS Word and Excel), and of email/calendar programs such as MS Outlook or Lotus Notes.
  • Good organizational skills, and the ability to organize and prioritize work projects and tasks.
  • Ability to interact with individuals from socially, economically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
