About the Job

Summary of Position:
The responsibility is assisting PI in performing experiments, collecting data, and summarizing/processing data for publications and grant applications. The essential work includes mouse embryo dissection and a variety of molecular biology and biochemical experiments. The person should integrate the lab's existing data with her/his results and make a summary of each experiment. The person should follow a schedule based on animal experiments and coordinate lab time with other lab members.

Essential Duties
20% Mouse embryo dissection, mouse timed mating/plug check (Essential) -Dissect mouse embryos (Stage E8.5 and later) for downstream analysis. -Perform daily plug check with other lab members (7 days a week with weekend rotation).

20% Gene expression analysis in mouse embryo (Essential) -Perform whole mount in situ hybridization of mouse embryos (wild type and mutants). It is essential to identify the exact developmental stage (between E8.5 and E11.5) and to pick up appropriate embryos for experiments. -Take images, record results and summarize data.

20% Immunofluorescence or fluorescent section in situ hybridization and confocal imaging (Essential) -Perform immunofluorescence or in situ hybridization staining of sections and take images by confocal microscope. -Process the images to evaluate gene/protein expression in a quantitative manner.

20% Gene expression analysis (Essential) -Prepare RNA from dissected mouse embryos. -Prepare cDNA and perform qPCR analysis. -Process the results, perform statistical analysis, and summarize data for figures and meeting presentation.

10% Other molecular biology experiments (Secondary) -Acquire the skill for other types of experiments as needed.

10% Assisting the PI (Secondary) -Assist the PI (Dr. Kawakami) with preparation of manuscripts, other documents and figures. -Maintain lab equipment and reagents

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented in application materials

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences and successful completion of upper level undergraduate courses in cell biology, genetics, or developmental biology, and basic lab experience, or a combination of education and experience listed to equal 4 years. Good communication skills, and the ability to interact with different levels of researchers (PI, postdoc, lab manager, undergraduates).

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in working with mice. Experience in experiments in the area of molecular biology, biochemistry, or developmental biology.
